Glasgow Veteran Calls for Continuation of Free Rail Companion Pilot

George Heenan, an 87-year-old Glasgow RAF veteran, is urging the Scottish Government to make the free rail companion pilot scheme a permanent policy.

The scheme, which was launched on April 1, 2025, allows holders of an Eye +1 National Entitlement Card (NEC) to travel with a companion for free on all ScotRail services and other train operators in Scotland.

The scheme is "life-changing" for veterans like Heenan, who attends Sight Scotland Veterans’ Hawkhead Centre in Paisley.
