Milwaukee Public Schools Using Retirees To Fill Vacant Teaching Positions

The district still has 83 vacancies to fill. Retired teacher Joe Conti is back at Milwaukee Public Schools, where he previously taught School Board Member James Ferguson.

Kristin Cheever, a retired art teacher, returned to the classroom as a substitute teacher after finding retirement unfulfilling. Cheever said,

“I thought, you know, maybe now is the time, and I’ll just see what happens,”
after her school announced budget cuts in 2023.

MPS aims to attract more retirees like Cheever who miss interacting with students. Author's summary: MPS fills vacancies with retirees.
