In 2021, Armenia introduced a voluntary certification system for teachers to assess subject knowledge and reward excellence.
The system aims to encourage self-education and raise professional standards, with top performers potentially seeing their salaries rise to 300,000 drams (approximately $783), roughly two and a half times the average teacher's pay.
Initially, the initiative was welcomed as an opportunity to motivate teachers and modernize the education system.
The goal was to encourage self-education and raise professional standards across the country’s schools.
