Balfour Beatty to Construct £162m Edinburgh Concert Hall
The long-delayed Edinburgh concert hall project is moving forward after the Scottish Government provided a £20m rescue package.
The project, which was first granted planning permission over six years ago, had been stalled due to rising costs. Initially estimated at £45m by architects Chipperfield and Reiach & Hall, the cost had ballooned, causing original contractor Sir Robert McAlpine to exit the project.
Balfour Beatty has been brought in under an early contractor involvement agreement to develop a build strategy for the complex city-centre site. The concert hall, commissioned by IMPACT Scotland, will provide a permanent home for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and serve as a major base for the Edinburgh International Festival.
The deal was sealed after the Scottish Government stepped in with a £20m rescue package for the project.
