Nelson Man Remanded After Police Standoff and Bomb Threat Charges

A 36-year-old man has been remanded in custody after a police standoff in Nelson, facing charges including threatening to kill members of the public and police.

The man, who has interim name suppression, appeared in the Nelson District Court on charges of threatening to kill, threatening grievous bodily harm, and intending to cause significant disruption to the civilian population.

He allegedly threatened to use explosives to harm those around him and destroy nearby buildings within a 100m radius.

The incident occurred near central Nelson, with police cordoning off the area on the corner of Nile St and Domett St.

The man will remain in custody pending further proceedings.
