Chief Justice of India BR Gavai has written to the Union Government proposing the name of Justice Surya Kant, the second senior Judge of the Supreme Court, as the next Chief Justice of India.
As per convention, the Law Ministry had earlier written to CJI BR Gavai, who will demit the office on November 23, seeking recommendation for his successor.
On the Government accepting CJI Gavai's proposal, Justice Surya Kant will assume the office of the Chief Justice of India on November 24, serving a tenure till February 9, 2027, and becoming the 53rd CJI.
Justice Surya Kant will have a comparatively long tenure.
