According to Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, the company is rapidly advancing in deep learning systems, with models increasingly able to solve complex tasks faster.
Altman stated that OpenAI is tracking towards achieving an intern-level research assistant by September 2026, and a fully automated "legitimate AI researcher" by 2028.

This goal was announced on the same day OpenAI finalized its transition to a public benefit corporation structure, moving away from its non-profit roots.
