Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Appropriations, Mmusi Maimane, has called for the introduction of an electronic portal to track government-awarded tenders.
Maimane, leader of Build One South Africa, believes a public portal will enhance transparency. He suggested a portal where citizens can receive regular updates on tender progress and the reasons behind contract awards.
"Imagine if a South African was sitting at Tembisa Hospital and was able to go, fine, I'm sitting here, there are no medicines, yet a tender was issued to ensure that medicines are being delivered here. I can log on to my phone and know which company it is so that I can trigger the mechanisms,"
Maimane said, emphasizing the need for transparency in government procurement.
