A recent network outage in South Dakota that lasted for nearly two business days was caused by mislabeled electrical wiring, according to lawmakers.
The outage affected various state government systems, including those used by the courts, local registers of deeds, auditors, and treasurers offices, as well as the state radio system for a short time.
The issue originated in a room full of routers at the Department of Transportation building in Pierre, where the mislabeled wiring led to the damage of a critical $80,000 network traffic controller switch and its backup.
The network outage downed a host of South Dakota state government systems in August.
