DJ Carey, a 54-year-old former Irish hurler, has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison for multiple counts of fraud and forgery.
He defrauded 22 people out of approximately €400,000 by falsely claiming he had cancer and needed money for treatment. To date, over €44,000 has been reimbursed.
Judge Martin Nolan stated that he could not think of a more heinous scam and claimed that Carey had taken advantage of people's kindness.
Carey's defence attorney informed the court that he had experienced a dramatic decline and was now considered a pariah. Carey had entered a guilty plea, eliminating the need for a jury trial.
