Why Age is No Barrier at Our Union
Today's workers are tomorrow's pensioners. As General Secretary, I am proud to support all members, including our retired members' organisation, which gives them a voice.
Pensioner poverty was a key topic at our recent retired members' conference in Brighton, with at least 1.9 million pensioners living below the breadline in one of the richest countries in the world.
- The gender pay gap is highest for women over 50, impacting their pensions.
- About one in five female pensioners in the UK lives in poverty.
Given that UNISON is a union with a majority of women members, many of them low-paid, it's a particular issue for us.
