Nassau Police Officer Ian Fogarty Honored by County Legislature

Ian Fogarty, a Nassau County police officer from Sayville, was recently recognized for rescuing two teens caught in a riptide at Cupsogue Beach County Park this past summer.

On July 16, Fogarty was visiting the park with his wife, Kirsten, and their three children when he noticed eight boys swimming offshore. Two of the 16-year-olds were caught about 100 yards from shore by a strong current.

With only a boogie board, the off-duty officer swam out to the teens and helped them return safely to the shore.

“It just looked like it was something that could go wrong very quickly,” said Fogarty, 38.

In recognition of his courageous action, the Nassau County Legislature honored Fogarty for his “selfless valor” and named him its “Top Cop” for September.
