Cambrian College is launching a Dental Assisting program starting this January to respond to the demand for qualified staff in Northern Ontario dental practices.
The 10-month program combines online courses with weekend sessions on campus, allowing students to earn their certificate without pausing their jobs. It also includes a seven-week placement, giving students practical experience working in dental offices.
“Dental assistants play a vital role in supporting dentists and dental hygienists, and enhancing patient care,” said Rachel Steels, dean of Cambrian’s School of Health Sciences.
They perform clinical and administrative tasks such as infection control, taking x-rays, aiding in procedures, chairside assistance, patient education, and office coordination.
The decision to introduce this program was driven by increasing demand from Northern Ontario’s dental community for skilled support staff. Cambrian College aims to help alleviate workforce shortages, especially in underserved areas.
“Dental assistants are essential members of the oral health care team,” Steels added. “We are proud to offer this program, helping students launch rewarding careers while supporting quality oral health care in our communities.”
Summary: Cambrian College’s new Dental Assisting program addresses critical staff shortages in Northern Ontario dental practices by providing flexible education and practical experience.
