Calm down Dems, your socialist champagne will age quickly

Zohran Mamdani is the mayor-elect of New York City, and the progressive wing of the Democratic Party is celebrating his rise with great enthusiasm. However, Mamdani won narrowly in a race complicated by a spoiler candidate, with Republican Curtis Sliwa acting as a lead-blocker against a weak opponent, former governor Andrew Cuomo.

With stronger, more respectable opponents, Mamdani might not have even reached the general election, let alone won. Voters chose Mamdani mostly because he was the lesser evil compared to a corrupt, sleazy, nepotistic candidate with a troubled past and a self-centered opponent whose own allies urged him to step down.

Both the Republican and Democratic establishments in New York have serious reflection and atonement ahead. Mamdani’s victory is more a critique of the complacent power brokers he challenges than a full endorsement of his platform.

Although Mamdani may appeal to the more radical elements of his party, his tenure as mayor is likely to fail dramatically, in a way that will be undeniable to both the nation and the Democrats themselves.

The tragedy is that to avoid falling into the hands of an explicitly anti-American socialist, New York City must endure exactly that.

For New Yorkers, Tuesday night’s election results seem likely to bring pain and suffering rather than progress.

Author's summary: Mamdani’s narrow win reflects voter dissatisfaction with traditional parties, but his progressive agenda faces serious challenges that may lead to failure and hardship ahead for New York City.
