Cambrian College is halting new admissions to six additional programs, mainly because of federal policy changes that have led to a steep decline in international student enrolment. This decision follows the suspension of 10 programs earlier this spring for the same reason.
The college is facing a projected deficit of $1.4 million for the 2025-2026 academic year after experiencing a decade of budget surpluses.
“Our energy has just been devoted to trying to save as many jobs as we can,” said the faculty union president.
“In large part, these suspensions are due to the significant reduction of students based on the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) policy change,” explained Cambrian's Vice-President, Academic Janice Clarke.
