Only one Tree Hill exists, but without its two leading actors, it feels incomplete. Many beloved shows, like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, are seeing reboots, and now there's talk about an upcoming reboot of One Tree Hill. This fan-favorite drama aired from 2003 to 2012 over nine seasons, with significant changes in its last two seasons.
Both shows share some troubled histories with their creators. Buffy was made by Joss Whedon, who has faced workplace harassment allegations. Similarly, One Tree Hill was created by Mark Schwahn, who was accused of sexual harassment by cast and crew, including lead actors Hilarie Burton Morgan and Danneel Harris Ackles, who publicly supported the accusations.
In summer 2024, news surfaced about the One Tree Hill reboot, but very little information has come out since. Recently, in a People magazine interview for their Sexiest Man Alive feature, lead actors Chad Michael Murray and James Lafferty expressed skepticism about returning to their iconic roles as Lucas and Nathan Scott.
Murray and Lafferty, who portrayed brothers evolving from rivals to close friends, admitted they struggle to imagine the show working today. Discussing the possibility of revisiting their characters after the 2012 finale, Lafferty commented:
"We did the show and played those characters for nine years. I’m not sure what the rest of that distance would be."
He was a series regular throughout the show’s entire run.
One Tree Hill remains a beloved series, yet the hesitation from its leading actors casts uncertainty over a reboot’s future.
Despite talks of a One Tree Hill reboot, lead actors Chad Michael Murray and James Lafferty doubt they'll return, highlighting challenges in reviving the beloved series.
