Luka Doncic led the Los Angeles Lakers with 35 points and 13 assists, narrowly missing a triple-double as the team overcame a late mistake to defeat the San Antonio Spurs 118–116. The Lakers closed the game with a decisive 21–10 run, marking their fifth consecutive victory in a contest filled with fouls and free throws.
Before tipoff, nearly every question directed at Lakers staff, including coach JJ Redick and center Deandre Ayton, concerned Spurs rookie star Victor Wembanyama. The 7-foot-4 Frenchman continues to intrigue the league with his rare skill set that challenges opponents both offensively and defensively.
Despite the attention surrounding Wembanyama, the Lakers executed well defensively, limiting his impact while getting another standout performance from Doncic. His playmaking and intensity proved pivotal late in the game.
“Our group is so connected right now, we were able to get back together and there was no quitting,” Redick said. “It’s a connected group.”
Returning after resting during Monday’s victory in Portland, Doncic contributed across the board with 13 assists, nine rebounds, five steals, and two blocks. Although he shot only 9-for-27 from the field, his critical plays secured the Lakers’ 7–2 record heading into their upcoming road trip.
“For him and for the group, the word of the day is resiliency,” Redick said.
Doncic’s near triple-double and the Lakers’ cohesive defense against Wembanyama sealed their narrow 118–116 win, highlighting the team’s growing resilience and chemistry.
