Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin, alongside the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association and the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, is organizing a webinar focused on best practices for ethical media coverage of crime victims.
The panel will be moderated by Nela Kalpic, State Director of Marsy’s Law Wisconsin.
The webinar will address recommendations from the National Center for Victims of Crime (NCVC) guide for reporters, highlighting best practices for interacting sensitively with victims. Key points include protecting survivors from unwanted attention and using their stories to benefit both the reporter and the victim.
“The guide includes best practices for interacting with victims, including how to protect survivors from unwanted attention and how to leverage their stories to yield positive results for the reporter and the survivor.”
The session will also explore how these practices relate to Wisconsin’s constitutional amendment—Marsy’s Law—that guarantees victims’ rights such as privacy, notice, and participation in the justice process.
Author's summary: This webinar unites media professionals and victim advocates to promote respectful and legally informed reporting practices that uphold Marsy’s Law protections for crime victims in Wisconsin.
