Hull KR CEO Paul Lakin has explained why next year’s World Club Challenge will take place at the home stadium of their local rivals, Hull FC.
Lakin emphasized that the Super League champions’ main goal was always to keep the event in Hull, highlighting the city’s strong rugby league heritage. Despite playing at their rivals’ MKM Stadium, Lakin expressed no concerns about Hull FC supporters filling the stands to support the Brisbane Broncos.
The decision came after recognizing that Hull KR’s usual ground, Craven Park, was too small to accommodate the expected large crowds. Initially, there was some thought given to relocating the match to Elland Road, but it was soon clear that staying in the city was preferable.
“It was really important for people to try to retain it in the city. It’s a huge rugby league city and it’ll be fantastic for us to keep it in Hull.”
“For financial reasons, it (Craven Park) wasn’t viable because we need to support the Broncos coming over here.”
In summary, moving the World Club Challenge to MKM Stadium was driven by capacity needs, financial sense, and a desire to keep the event within Hull, ensuring fans from all sides can experience the biggest club rugby league contest.
