Outfielder Leody Taveras is set to join the Baltimore Orioles on a one-year contract worth $2 million, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, who credited Mike Rodriguez for first reporting the deal.
Taveras was designated for assignment by the Seattle Mariners in mid-June, cleared waivers, and was sent outright to their Triple-A team in Tacoma. The Mariners had acquired him from Texas via waiver claim in early May, but Taveras elected free agency a few weeks ago.
He spent five major league seasons with the Rangers after debuting in 2020 in a part-time role. Initially, Taveras struggled offensively but showed strong defense in center field and speed on the bases. His role expanded in 2022 when he played in 143 games. Across 2020-2022, he had 660 plate appearances and reached 554 in 2023, hitting 14 home runs with 14 stolen bases and a .266/.312/.421 slash line.
The successful 2023 season earned him a significant role in 2024, though his hitting declined considerably. He posted an 84 wRC+ over 529 plate appearances, stole a career-high 23 bases, but his batting average dropped to .229.
"Notably, Taveras qualified for arbitration ahead of that 2024 season given his Super Two status."
Taveras and the Rangers agreed to a $4.75 million contract for 2025. However, concerns over luxury tax implications sparked trade rumors, and though Texas retained him, Taveras continued to struggle at the plate, finishing with a slash line of .241/.259/.
Leody Taveras' career shows defensive skill and speed, with fluctuating offensive performance; the Orioles hope to benefit from his potential with a fresh start in 2025.
