Australia’s batsman Matthew Short describes Indian spinner Varun Chakravarthy as difficult to read due to his pace and variations, complicating preparations for next year’s T20 World Cup in subcontinental conditions.
In the current T20I series, Varun has claimed four wickets in two innings, playing a key role in India’s hopes for a series victory in Australia. The Australian team is working hard to counter his spin ahead of the upcoming World Cup hosted in India and Sri Lanka.
“What makes it harder is just how quick he bowls," Short remarked on the eve of the fourth T20I in Gold Coast. “We’ve watched a lot of footage, but that’s going to be a challenge heading to India if it is spinning or in Sri Lanka as well.”
Short acknowledged the difference in conditions, noting that there is less spin in Australia compared to the subcontinent, but admitted Varun remains a tough opponent to face.
Besides tackling Varun, Short aims to cement his place as Australia finalizes its T20 World Cup squad. He values the experience of facing “world-class” Indian bowlers and is aware the World Cup conditions will be very different, offering opportunities for improvement.
“There are always ways to improve.”
