Prop 50 Approved in California, Opposed in Mother Lode

California voters passed Proposition 50, a statewide measure on temporary Congressional redistricting, during Tuesday’s election. The statewide outcome contrasted sharply with results from the Mother Lode region.

Statewide Results

Across the state, nearly 64 percent of voters supported Prop 50, while just over 36 percent opposed it. The proposition allows for temporary redrawing of Congressional maps for the 2026, 2028, and 2030 elections.

Governor Gavin Newsom promoted the measure to bolster Democratic representation in Congress. He framed it as a response to recent redistricting maneuvers in Texas that enhanced Republican seats.

Local Opposition

In Tuolumne County, a little more than 60 percent of voters rejected the proposal, while just under 40 percent approved it. Calaveras County showed similar numbers, with over 62 percent voting no and just under 38 percent voting yes.

The state map reveals a political divide: coastal areas with stronger Democratic leanings largely supported the measure, whereas more conservative inland counties stood in opposition.

Author’s Summary

Prop 50’s approval underscores California’s coastal–inland political split, highlighting regional divides over redistricting and representation strategy.
