Storm Warning in Massachusetts: High Winds and Snow Expected

Another surge of intense wind will sweep through Massachusetts tonight and persist into Thursday morning. A developing low-pressure system is moving across northern New England and into the Gulf of Maine this evening.

As the system pushes toward the Canadian Maritimes overnight, it will rapidly intensify in a process known as bombogenesis. Meanwhile, a high-pressure system advancing from the southwest will tighten the pressure gradient, increasing wind strength.

“Air flows from high pressure to low pressure. The bigger the difference, the stronger the winds.”

With the region positioned between these contrasting systems, strong westerly and northwesterly winds are expected, sustaining speeds of 20–40 mph and gusts up to 50–60 mph. The most powerful gusts are forecast around 11 p.m., especially across southern and central New England.

Gusty winds will continue through Thursday afternoon at similar speeds, particularly over higher elevations. Conditions should begin calming by Friday afternoon. Temperatures will fall from the upper 50s under cloudy skies to the low 40s overnight.

Author’s Summary

Rapidly intensifying low pressure will bring strong winds across New England, with gusts over 50 mph before calming by Friday and temperatures dipping into the 40s.
