First Picture of Death Row Grandmother Lindsay Sandiford Back on British Soil

Lindsay Sandiford, 69, who was convicted 13 years ago for smuggling £1.6 million worth of cocaine into Bali, arrived at Heathrow's Terminal 4 today. After spending over a decade on death row in Indonesia, the British grandmother has returned to the UK.

She was seen in a wheelchair, dressed in black leggings and a green cardigan, covering her face with her clothing.

Repatriation Following Diplomatic Agreement

Sandiford departed Indonesia early Friday after a deal between Jakarta and London spared her execution and allowed her repatriation on humanitarian grounds. The British government reportedly spent £600 on her return flight ticket.

Departure from Indonesian Prison

Before boarding her flight, Sandiford attended a handover ceremony at Kerobokan Prison in Bali. She left the prison accompanied by fellow British inmate Shabab Shahabadi, 35, who is serving a life sentence for drug offenses.

The two were driven to Denpasar International Airport and were expected to meet British Ambassador Dominic Jeremy before their flight.

"Lindsay Sandiford and Shahab Shahabadi have serious health conditions and are being repatriated on humanitarian grounds," said Matthew Downing, the UK deputy ambassador to Indonesia.

Author’s summary: Lindsay Sandiford, after over a decade on death row in Indonesia for drug smuggling, has returned to the UK following a diplomatic agreement citing humanitarian concerns.
