The Baltimore Orioles have reached an agreement with Leody Taveras on a one-year contract worth $2 million, pending a physical, a source confirmed to The Baltimore Sun. Although free agency officially starts at 5 p.m. on Thursday, the Orioles have already secured the elite defensive outfielder to strengthen their lineup.
Taveras, 27, has six years of Major League Baseball experience since debuting at age 21 with the Texas Rangers in 2020. Known for his exceptional speed and defensive skills in the outfield, he has struggled offensively with a career batting average of .236 and an OPS of .651. He is a switch-hitter and spent most of the 2025 season in the minor leagues before electing free agency in October.
Taveras played a key role in the Rangers’ 2023 World Series run, posting his best major league season with a .266 batting average and a .733 OPS. That year, the Rangers swept the Orioles in the American League Division Series. However, after a slow start to the 2025 season, the Rangers designated him for assignment in May, followed by the Seattle Mariners in June.
"The agreement adds outfield depth and several traits needed by the Orioles," Mike Rodriguez first reported.
The Orioles aim to bolster their defensive outfield with Taveras’s speed and glove, despite his offensive challenges, hoping his experience and athleticism will contribute to the team's improvement.
