Matson Introduces WhaleSpotter System
Matson Inc. has partnered with WhaleSpotter Corp. to deploy a whale detection system on multiple ships.
The system, developed by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), combines thermal and AI-driven detection with real-time monitoring to detect whales up to three nautical miles away.
The system’s real-time alerts give vessel crews the opportunity to adjust course and reduce the risk of whale strikes.
- The WhaleSpotter system was developed with support from Matson and other contributors.
- In 2023, Matson provided a $1 million research grant to WHOI to advance the system’s development.
